Bong Joint Sizes Explained: 10mm, 14mm & 18mm

Bong Joint Sizes Explained: 10mm, 14mm & 18mm

A replacement bowl, downstem, or adapter has to match more than the look of your bong. Joint size and joint direction determine whether the parts fit together. Checking both before ordering can prevent a useless accessory and reduce the chance of forcing glass into the wrong connection.

What is a bong joint?

The joint is the fitted glass connection where removable pieces meet. Ground-glass joints use matching tapered surfaces to create a stable connection without needing to be pushed tightly together.

Common joint sizes

10 mm

Ten-millimeter joints are commonly associated with compact glass and smaller rigs. Their small size can help keep a piece lightweight, but the surrounding glass should still be handled gently.

14 mm

Fourteen-millimeter joints are widely used across medium-size bongs, bubblers, and rigs. Many replacement bowls and accessories are offered in this size, but compatibility should never be assumed from appearance alone.

18 mm

Eighteen-millimeter joints are often found on larger pieces and connections designed around a wider opening. The correct downstem length and joint direction still matter.

Male vs. female joints

A male joint fits into a female joint. A female joint receives the male connection. Accessories must use the opposite joint direction from the connection on the piece. Product listings may describe this explicitly, so read the variant name and specifications carefully.

How to check your joint size

  1. Remove the accessory gently and clean the joint so the edges are visible.
  2. Check the original product listing, packaging, or any size marking first.
  3. If no specification is available, measure the relevant opening carefully in millimeters.
  4. Confirm the accessory’s joint direction and, for downstems, its usable length.

Measurements taken with a ruler can be imprecise. When two sizes look close, contact the seller with the product name and clear photos instead of forcing a part.

Downstem length matters too

Two downstems can share the same joint size but have different lengths. A replacement should extend to the intended position in the water chamber without pressing against the base. Compare total length and the measurement from the top of the joint to the lower end when those details are provided.

Never force a connection

If a part does not seat with light, controlled handling, stop. Forcing fitted glass can chip a joint or leave the downstem stuck. If that has already happened, follow our stuck-downstem guide.
