Bong Percolator Types Explained: What Changes Between Designs?

Bong Percolator Types Explained: What Changes Between Designs?

A percolator is a glass feature that divides airflow through multiple openings while water moves inside the piece. Different percolators create different visual patterns and layouts, but the best choice also depends on size, stability, and how much detailed cleaning you want to do.

Tree percolators

A tree percolator uses several narrow arms, usually with openings near their ends. The branching design is easy to recognize and adds movement inside the chamber. Those arms can be delicate and need careful handling during cleaning.

Honeycomb percolators

A honeycomb perc is a flat disc with many small holes. It fits into a relatively compact vertical space and creates a dense pattern of small streams through the water. The small openings can collect residue, so frequent light cleaning is easier than waiting for heavy buildup.

Showerhead percolators

A showerhead design typically uses a flared lower section with slits or openings around it. The layout spreads flow around the chamber and is common in both bongs and compact rigs.

Matrix percolators

Matrix percs usually place rows of small slits around a cylindrical section. They create a detailed, symmetrical look and may contain many narrow openings that require thorough rinsing.

Inline percolators

An inline perc uses a horizontal tube with slits or holes. It can suit pieces with wider or more horizontal chamber layouts. As with any fixed internal feature, its position affects how easily cleaning solution and rinse water can reach every section.

Recycler-style pathways

Recycler glass sends water through connected chambers and return paths. A recycler is a complete circulation layout rather than one single perc shape, and it may be paired with other diffusion features. Explore examples in our dab rigs and recyclers collection.

Single vs. multiple percolators

Multiple chambers and percs add visual complexity and more internal surfaces. They can also increase the piece’s height, weight, and cleaning time. A simpler design may be a better daily option for someone who prioritizes fast maintenance.

What should you compare?

  • Overall height and base stability
  • Number of chambers and fixed internal sections
  • Joint size and included accessories
  • Whether every chamber can drain fully
  • How easily narrow openings can be rinsed
  • Available storage space

Cleaning a percolator bong

Empty the piece, rinse with warm—not boiling—water, and use an appropriate glass-cleaning method. Rotate the piece gently so solution reaches internal sections. Never strike, scrape, or force tools against fixed glass. Read our complete glass bong cleaning guide and cleaning-frequency guide before buildup becomes difficult.

If you are still choosing the overall shape, compare beakers, straight tubes, recyclers, and bubblers.
