Bong vs. Dab Rig: What’s the Difference?

Bongs and dab rigs can look similar, but they are usually designed around different setups. Understanding the basic differences makes it easier to shop by size, shape, and function instead of choosing on looks alone.
What is a bong?
A bong is a water pipe commonly built around a bowl, downstem, water chamber, and mouthpiece. Designs range from compact straight tubes to larger beakers and multi-percolator pieces. A larger water chamber can offer more cooling capacity, while a smaller piece can be easier to store and clean.
What is a dab rig?
A dab rig is also a water-filtered piece, but rigs are commonly more compact and may use a different attachment than a traditional bowl. Recyclers route water through connected chambers, while simpler rigs focus on a short vapor path and compact footprint.
What should you compare?
Start with the space you have, how much cleaning you want to do, and whether you prefer a compact or statement-size setup. Look closely at joint size, included accessories, overall height, percolation, and replacement-part compatibility when those details are listed.

Keep care in mind
More chambers and percolators can add visual detail and water movement, but they can also take longer to clean. If low-maintenance care matters most, a simpler shape may be the better everyday choice.
